THE BIG DB COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP

'Fill a bag for Discovery Bay'

After visiting schools within Discovery Bay (to share our experiences and findings from the Lantau Island Paddle challenge) we discovered that school children all across the community want to help combat the impact of single-use plastic within our community but, beside making better choices as consumers, did not necessarily know how and what to do about it.  The challenge was set...and the need for the community to unite is even more important after the devastating affects of Typhoon Mangkhut.

We, as the Lantau Paddlers, realised that we needed to maximise the impact of the message we had to get as many people involved as possible, taking action. This gave us the unique opportunity to build bridges amongst the educational providers of Discovery Bay and propose an event called 'The Big DB Community Clean-up'. But what is it?

The Event

On Wednesday, October 10th (as a nod to World Clean-up day, the month before), between 4-6pm, we hope every member of our community to 'fill a bag for Discovery Bay'. Whether joining a student-led litter pick (or doing your own!) we would like for every member of our community picking litter at beaches, parks, hedgerows, drains, walkways; anywhere where you can think of, including outside your front door! As well as being an excellent educational opportunity, we believe this will open the eyes of the community (once you look closely) to how much litter there actually is and to inspire residents to make better choices as consumers and to make Discovery Bay the pride of Hong Kong.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ORGANISERS ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CHILDREN. PARENTS MUST ACCOMPANY CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 10. CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN COLLECTING LITTER & WHEN CROSSING STREETS. CLOSED-TOED SHOES, A HAT, GLOVES, & SUNSCREEN NEED TO BE WORN, PLUS A RE-USABLE WATER BOTTLE MUST BE BROUGHT ALONG FOR HYDRATION.

The Objectives of the Event

  • To help the community recognise the impact and to take action against the use of single-use plastic within the community of Discovery Bay.

  • Creating a united community movement - building bridges amongst the school's of DB and getting children, parents, adults of all ages involved in a shared project.

  • Creating leadership opportunities for students.

If you are unsure how much litter you will find just look closely, REALLY closely and you'll see that there is lots hidden amongst the grass, leaves and bushes around Discovery Bay. Our aim is to collect every single bit!
